The Waste We Produce

By: Ivy Zhan

  • 84% of fast fashion items/textile waste goes to landfills (EPA)
  • In NYC only, 400 million lbs of clothes go to waste annually
  • Textiles take 200+ years to decompose
  • Aluminum can: 250 years to decompose
  • Plastic bottle: 450 years to decompose
  • Styrofoam: never decomposes
    • Globally, 2.3 million tons of Styrofoam, or Expanded polystyrene (EPS), find its way to landfills every year
    • While EPS is recyclable, it is very porous and often serves its purpose as food packaging, so many recycling programs cannot accept it as it won’t be recycled efficiently
